Thanet wind farm comes online

Britain’s growing offshore wind energy industry has taken another stride forward as the Thanet Offshore wind farm came online.

One hundred giant Vestas V90 turbines – each on pedestals 115 metres (380 ft) tall – were switched on which together capable of generating up to 300 Megawatts of power.

Thanet is now the biggest offshore wind farm in the world but will be dwarfed by others being planned around the UK coast.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne was at the site of the wind farm 35 km (22 miles) offshore from UK Southeastern town of Thanet to switch on the country’s latest wind farm, which has been developed by Vattenfall.

With Thanet online, Britain’s total wind farm generating capacity surpassed the 5,000 MW mark, Huhne pointed out at the opening ceremony.

“I’m pleased that we’ve reached the point where 5GW of our energy comes from onshore and offshore wind – that’s enough electricity to power all the homes in Scotland,” Huhne declared.
