Shell announces next generation gearbox oil, Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, is now carbon neutral

Shell today announced at WindEurope Offshore 2019 that its industry-leading gearbox oil, Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, is now carbon neutral[1].

Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based carbon credits will compensate CO2 emissions from the lifecycle of Shell Omala S5 Wind 320. Each carbon credit represents the avoidance or removal of greenhouse gases equivalent to 1 tonne of CO2.

Richard Tucker, Shell’s General Manager for B2B Lubricants and Supply Chain Technology, commented: “The avoidance, reduction, and offsetting of carbon emissions are incredibly important. Through this latest offering, we can further support our customers in meeting their own ambitions to address emissions.

“Measures such as gearbox optimisation also help ensure that the energy captured is stored and distributed resourcefully and does not go to waste further down the value chain, improving operations for customers, and helping to avoid the need for energy production from carbon emitting processes. Maximising turbine efficiency will be key to wind remaining a driving force in the transition to a low-carbon energy system.”

The high performance oil comes with a market-leading 10-year warranty which gives customers peace of mind that fewer oil changes are likely to be made during a wind turbine’s lifecycle. This reduces costly breakdowns, generates productivity gains, and helps to ensure consistent protection against equipment wear.

Shell Omala S5 Wind 320, a synthetic wind turbine oil with world-leading filtration technology, helps to lessen gear and bearing damage, while delivering exceptional lubrication performance, increased efficiency, and improving the reliability of the gearbox. With a highly diverse operating temperature range, the oil is designed to operate effectively under severe operating conditions and in extreme climates. Its advanced formulation provides enhanced protection[2] – up to 14 times better corrosion prevention than a key competitor product[3] – to help avoid unplanned downtime and the associated repair costs. Shell Omala S5 Wind also has excellent performance against yellow metal materials which makes it fit for purpose as well as for new plain bearing gearbox designs.
