Planet’s most powerful tidal turbine wins at Scottish Green Energy Awards

Scotland’s world-leading tidal energy sector and Dundee’s new V&A museum are among winners

Project which brought 24-7 power to Fair Isle also honoured
A tidal turbine which smashed power generation records in 2018 has been handed a top award by Scotland’s renewable energy industry.

The Scottish Green Energy Awards, which took place in Edinburgh tonight (December 6), saw winners in 11 categories receive trophies recognising their work in the sector, which employs 16,000 people.

Orbital Marine Power’s pioneering SR2000 tidal turbine scooped the Best Innovation Award after generating more power in one year than had been produced by Scotland’s entire wave and tidal energy sector in the 12 years prior to its launch.

GI Energy and Dundee City Council took home the Carbon Reduction Award for the innovative design and installation of a 100% low-carbon heating and cooling system at the V&A Dundee – a first in the UK.

Last night’s winners were selected by a panel of 12 judges from a shortlist of 51.

Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “This year’s Scottish Green Energy Awards once again showcase the incredible innovation, commitment and passion of those working within our industry.

“They are continuing to push the boundaries of innovation, with the many pioneering projects developed over the past 12 months maintaining Scotland’s place as a world leader in renewable energy.

“The hard work, knowledge and drive of those within the industry has contributed significantly to our fight against the carbon emissions which cause climate change, as well as to Scotland’s economy, and particularly our rural communities.

“Our industry is enormously proud of the inspirational people and organisations we have come together to celebrate at the Scottish Green Energy Awards and my congratulations go to all nominees, and of course winners.”

The 2018 Scottish Green Energy Awards was headline-sponsored by EDF Renewables.

EDF Renewables’ CEO Matthieu Hue said: “Congratulations to all the award winners and everyone who entered to make the event another great evening of celebration.

“The high levels of passion and expertise in the renewables industry is inspiring to see. What continues to be achieved here in Scotland every year has to be admired and makes me certain that there will be many more exciting developments in the future.”
