IMPSA Expands Investment in ANSYS Solutions for Wind and Hydro Turbine Innovation

Renewable Energy Provider Leveraging ANSYS Multiphysics Engineering Simulation

Renewable energy equipment developer/manufacturer IMPSA is expanding its investment in ANSYS® software to create innovative wind and hydro turbines, which will make the systems more efficient and, consequently, deliver improved customer satisfaction.

Headquartered in Argentina, IMPSA plans to apply the full range of ANSYS capabilities in complex multidisciplinary applications, including aerodynamic engineering, structural mechanics, fluids dynamics, noise prediction, design life, electric generators, and control and power electronics concerns.

“Simulation-driven product development is a key element of our R&D strategy, designed to enhance our global competitiveness, lower per-unit power generation cost and create superior customer value,” said. Dr. Bernardo Beling, director of technology at IMPSA. “The breadth and depth of the ANSYS multiphysics-based portfolio coupled with ANSYS high-performance computing capabilities and dependable local support make the ANSYS solution unique in addressing our current and future design and analysis needs.”

The renewable energy industry is fraught with engineering challenges due to a wide range of variables that go well beyond component design – including interactions at the system level as well as manufacturing, transportation, installation and operating behavior concerns. Traditional build-and-test approaches are expensive and time consuming, and they provide only limited insight into optimal designs. The coupled multiphysics capabilities of ANSYS engineering simulation software can help organizations to optimize the design of the entire application, whether the challenge is a small wind turbine or a large wind energy project.

“As the wind and hydro turbine industry grows, it introduces advanced technology such as multi-axis designs, larger blades, gearless drives, new generators and controllers, and improved tower design. To achieve overall product integrity of turbines and their components, engineers must look at a total solution,” said Ahmad Haidari, director of energy industry marketing at ANSYS. “Using multiphysics technology from ANSYS, IMPSA can develop differentiating products that will meet the challenging requirements of renewable energy projects. The company’s expanded use of our portfolio proves that simulation can bring much value and innovation to an organization.”

Engineering Simulation and Scientific Software (ESSS) Ltda., the ANSYS distribution and support channel partner in South America, worked closely with IMPSA on the sale and is instrumental in providing local support. “Our relationship with IMPSA has grown over the last decade, and we have responded to their growing trust in the ANSYS integrated portfolio with an increased level of engineering expertise, industry knowledge and technical support. With our new office in Cordoba, Argentina, we continue to expand our resources throughout South America to support ANSYS fluids, mechanical and electromagnetics solutions for customers in the energy sector as well as other markets in the region,” said Marcus Reis, vice president of sales, support and services at ESSS.
