Exceptional achievement by Sulzer engineer

Tom Ison lands the 2018 Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA) Karsten Moholt award

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to a number of projects, Tom Ison, Electrical Engineer at Sulzer, has been awarded the 2018 EASA Karsten Moholt Exceptional Achievement Award. The young engineer’s technical expertise and professionalism has impressed many colleagues and customers alike and their recommendations caught the eye of the judges.

The annual award is made in memory of Karsten Moholt and Karsten Aleksander Moholt who are past Presidents and Regional Director of EASA European & World Chapter. It recognizes talented young engineers that have excelled in their role and made considerable contributions to their business.

Chris Powles, Head of Electro Mechanical Services – EMEA, commented: “Since joining Sulzer in January 2017, Tom has been successfully involved in many technical projects. His professional attitude and technical expertise have certainly had a very positive impact. Several of our customers who have been supported by Tom, have offered glowing recommendations, which doubtless contributed to the award being made to this talented engineer.”

In his short time at Sulzer to date, Tom has taken on several roles: project manager, technical lead and design engineer. Often combining his skills, Tom had a pivotal role in implementing new, state-of-the-art balancing software as part of the high-speed balance pit upgrade project. His in-depth knowledge and understanding ensured that all the challenges were overcome quickly and effectively, ensuring the project was completed on time and within budget.

Tom has also been heavily involved in the project to install a new 2.4 MW high voltage test bed in Sulzer’s Falkirk Service Center. Over five months, Tom provided essential technical support to ensure that the fully automated test bed was properly equipped and commissioned. Thanks to his contribution, the new test bed offers customers a quicker turnaround, same-day reports and the option to witness tests remotely.

Tom was presented with his award at the EASA European & World Annual Convention & AGM, held in Antwerp, Belgium. The prize also included funding to visit Karsten Moholt AS in Bergen, Norway, as well as another EASA member company to learn more about the industry and further increase his technical knowledge.

Tom commented: “It was a great privilege to be nominated for the award and about the last thing I expected was to win. I really enjoy working with our customers and getting involved with our own in-house projects as well. This has allowed me to expand my engineering knowledge and skillset. I am looking forward to visiting Bergen, it will be a wonderful experience and help me gain even more insight into the industry.”
