Together for success

Sulzer’s commitment to Brazil dates back to 1948, when it purchased a pump manufacturing plant in São Bernardo do Campo, in the region of São Paulo. As Brazil has grown to become the world’s ninth-largest economy, Sulzer established a network of technically advanced manufacturing, testing, repair and maintenance facilities. Today, service centers specializing in pumping solutions, separation and mixing technology and services for all types of rotating equipment support local industry.

Equipped with high-precision instruments and machine tools, the Brazilian manufacturing facilities and service centers are positioned to deliver quality equipment and maintenance services. This is further supported by experienced and dedicated teams of engineers that provide flexible, round-the-clock support.

This was demonstrated when Sulzer was contracted for the repair of a centrifugal compressor. The rotating equipment services team in Brazil, with the support of the Houston Service Center, was able to deliver a turnkey solution from reverse engineering through to on-site installation. The scope of the repair was to replace not only the shaft of the compressor but also the sleeves and the thrust collar. Once the unit was reassembled it was then installed by a local field service team. The entire project was delivered within three months.

Sulzer provides local, single points of contact for a wide range of tailored engineering solutions to key businesses in the area, such as refineries, hydrocarbon processing, power generation, water, pulp and paper, fertilizers and more general industry.

In a recent project for example, Sulzer in Brazil was contacted to overhaul a GE FR6FA gas turbine. After an initial inspection of the turbine generator set, it was determined that the rotor needed to be exchanged. As part of the refurbishment, the original buckets were installed on the new rotor and the combustion parts were inspected by the engineers for any fatigue. After installing the new rotor, the casing was laser aligned using specialist equipment.

In addition to its rotating equipment services, Sulzer supports Brazilian customers with high quality pumping solutions for all industries. One of the biggest projects involved designing, manufacturing and installing some of the largest pumps in Sulzer’s history as part of a project to transport water to some of the driest regions of Brazil.

Working closely with the government, Sulzer has delivered six massive pumps that have capacities up to 45’000 m3/hr and form part of the project that includes 300 kilometers of canals, nine pumping stations and 27 reservoirs. As a result, an area the size of France, and home to a population of 12 million Brazilians, has now recovered from severe drought conditions.

Sulzer also offers a complete range of specialized, mass transfer equipment for distillation, absorption, stripping, evaporation, phase separation, liquid-liquid extraction, crystallization, and membrane separation to local industry.

Sulzer’s global network of 180 production and service sites distributed across more than 40 countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela, make it possible for the company to support Brazil’s global competitiveness in its key sectors with state-of-the-art engineering solutions. Brazilian businesses can benefit from a wide range of services to boost operational efficiency while minimizing their downtime.
