BYD Battery-Box Premium receives VDE 2510-50 certification by TÜV Rheinland

Shenzhen/Munich, May 12, 2020 – BYD Co. Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rechargeable batteries, today received the official certification for the VDE 2510-50 energy storage standard by TÜV Rheinland for their Battery-Box Premium system in the BYD headquarters in Shenzhen. The German energy storage system standard VDE-AR-E2510-50 is the strictest safety standard in the energy storage industry and the certification underlines BYD’s commitment to continuously invest into the development and delivery of the safest possible energy storage technology on the market. In Addition to VDE2510-50, The BYD systems also received safety certification according to 2PfG 2698  standard by TÜV Rheinland. The combination of high system efficiency and safety with the module design for flexibility in various application scenarios has made the BYD Battery-Box systems one of the most popular choices across many markets, as e.g. a 19 percent market share in Germany for the year 2019, recently determined by EuPD, shows.

The global market for energy storage systems continues to grow rapidly. A joint installation of solar PV systems with battery storage e.g. currently makes up almost 90% of all residential installations in Germany according to a survey by EuPD. This trend can be seen across many markets as the number of countries in which energy storage systems are being installed grows. The increasing interest of the automotive industry around e-mobility in connection with forward-looking charging concepts is another factor which accelerates the implementation of residential and commercial energy storage solutions. Accordingly, the production of storage systems is also expanding globally. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to establish security standards installers and end-customers can rely on when choosing a battery storage system.

Science and technology institution VDE created VDE-AR-E 2510-50 in May 2017 as a set of specifications for safety requirements for stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) with lithium batteries. The VDE standard put forward strict technical requirements and test conditions for energy storage systems in terms of electrical safety, battery safety, electromagnetic compatibility, functional safety, energy management, transportation safety, environmental protection, etc. It refers to the three standards of EN 62477, EN 62109 and EN 61010, including the assessment of protection against electric shock, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and other hazards to ensure the strictest safety features for all application environments. TÜV Rheinland tests energy storage systems for a qualification, in regards to this standard as well as for their own 2PfG 2698 standard. Together the certifications can be considered the world ’s first comprehensive evaluation standard for energy storage, covering the vast majority of energy storage safety functions.

Just like the award-winning predecessor models, the Battery-Box Premium line is based on BYD’s lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) technology for maximum safety, life cycles and power. The new system generation combines all the popular functions with additional system features and helpful tools for installers. The systems are even more flexible and scalable, covering a wider range of application scenarios while providing a higher energy density and a smaller footprint. All models are capable of high-powered emergency-backup and feature both on- and off-grid functionality.

Although the certification already applied with the launch of the latest product generation Battery-Box Premium in Q1 2020, the official ceremony had to be postponed due to the global pandemic situation.

Mr. Weichun Li, VP Global Power Electronics Business and General Manager of Greater China Solar & Commercial Products at TÜV Rheinland comments: “As the energy storage market is growing, it is crucial to ensure the safety of storage systems and to provide standards and certifications customers can rely on when picking a solution. The certification for both VDE 2510-50 and 2PfG 2698 not only highlights BYD’s leading position in ESS industry area, but also means that BYD Battery-Box Premium has passed tests and risk assessments successfully.”

“Our goal is to provide the safest and most efficient energy storage systems to our customers while allowing them maximal application flexibility through the modular design of our solutions”, said Julia Chen, Global Director BYD Battery-Box. “We are continuously investing into R&D to stay ahead of the curve and to provide the most advanced technology – including the strictest safety measurements. Therefore, we are very pleased to see a renowned authority such as TÜV Rheinland confirming that our systems fulfil the strictest safety standards in the industry.”
