Cool Earth Solar Named a 2010 Platts Global Energy Award Finalist

Company’s CPV Technology Shortlisted for Sustainable Technology Innovation of the Year Award

Cool Earth Solar, an innovative solar company providing clean energy, has been named a finalist in the 2010 Platts Global Energy Awards, an annual competition honoring top achievers in the utility industry.

Established in 1999 and widely recognized as the “Oscars” of the energy industry, Platts Global Energy Awards highlight corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance in 17 categories spanning the entire energy complex. The 2010 finalists were selected from more than 200 nominations and represent energy companies from 21 countries on three continents.

Cool Earth Solar is a finalist in the Sustainable Technology Innovation of the Year category, which recognizes eco-friendly, first-mover technologies that produce, capture or save energy. The company has created a breakthrough concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology that can massively scale to meet power demands at prices competitive with traditional fossil fuels. Unlike most solar energy systems that require large amounts of heavy, expensive materials, Cool Earth Solar’s inflated CPV solution is based on ordinary thin-film plastic and air. When inflated, Cool Earth Solar’s concentrator naturally forms a shape that focuses sunlight onto a PV cell and magnifies it by up to 400 times. This design generates the same amount of electricity as traditional flat-panel PV systems while using up to 300 to 400 times less solar cell material.

“We are honored to be named a finalist in the prestigious 2010 Platts Global Energy Awards competition and pleased to stand alongside so many other distinguished companies,” said Rob Lamkin, CEO of Cool Earth Solar. “This recognition for our sustainable CPV technology design underscores Cool Earth’s commitment to reduce the material requirements of our technology and provide a light-weight, low-impact source for generating clean energy.”

Winners of the 2010 Global Energy Awards will be announced at a black-tie dinner at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street on Thursday, December 2, presented by Platts and Capgemini, the program’s principal sponsor for the past eight years. A division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Platts is a leading global provider of energy and metals information.
