BYD Battery-Box achieved top ranking in 2018 energy storage test by HTW

The Technical University of Berlin (HTW) tested the efficiency of 20 renewable energy storage systems and rated BYD’s Battery-Box as No 1

Shenzhen/Berlin, December 4th, 2018 – BYD Co. Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, has been ranked as the most efficient energy storage system in the latest test by Technical University Berlin (HTW). The survey “Stromspeicher Inspektion 2018” compared 60 data sheets of the most active providers in the German market and then tested 20 systems of providers who have a combined market share of more than 50 percent in Germany. The focus of the survey was the analysis of information on storage capacity and efficiency. The test is aimed at providing more transparency and comparable data to help installers and consumers to choose the most suitable solution based on reliable and proven facts.

Despite regulatory obstacles the adoption of de-central solar power and storage systems is gaining momentum. According to HWT more than 100,000 photovoltaic (PV) systems in combination with battery systems for powering buildings have been installed in Germany already. Every second newly installed PV system in the residential building area is now equipped with a battery storage system. How well storage systems can support the advancement of the energy transition however also depends on the efficiency of energy storage systems, the university’s experts conclude.

When looking for a suitable and efficient power storage device, consumers, installers and planners mostly have to rely on information from product brochures and data sheets the manufacturers provide. Several companies claim to offer “industry-leading system efficiency” or the “most efficient storage system in the market”. What is missing, however, is usually evidence based on laboratory or field measurement data. A total of 45 different terms for indicating the storage capacity were found in 60 data sheets of leading solution providers the university compared. In view of this it is obvious that a reliable comparison of the size or efficiency of the battery storage based on the manufacturer’s information is currently not possible.

Against this background, the 60 manufacturers and suppliers of PV storage systems most active in Germany were invited to participate in the present study. Not every company invited, followed the invitation by providing the necessary transparency for participating in the survey.

20 systems were finally entered into the final research phase. The focus of the survey was the analysis of information on storage capacity and efficiency. The efficiency of the PV storage systems was also evaluated with the System Performance Index (SPI).

Among the top 15 solution combinations of energy storage systems and inverters the BYD Battery-Box HV was listed four times in total as the most efficient solution combination in the whole survey.

“Being very transparent in regards to our system specifications is a part of BYD’s company strategy”, said Julia Chen, Global Sales Director, BYD Batteries. “We are therefore delighted that in this survey by HWT Berlin we were able to prove again how efficient our system works in combination with the inverter solutions by valued partners.”
