The first decade of the third millennium proved to be pivotal for the renewable energy industry. International deals brokered by governments at summits in Maastricht, Amsterdam, Kyoto, Bonn, Copenhagen and Rio have evolved into life-changing commitments which have shifted the perceptions of society as a whole.
Originally established in tandem with the Sustainable Energy Europe 2005-2008 campaign, Power and Energy Solutions is committed to keeping global readers at the forefront of new policy and targets throughout the second decade of the millennium – and beyond.
The next few years are going to be even more critical for the industry, set against the backdrop of global economic uncertainty. According to a recent report by the EREC and Greenpeace, the overall annual market for renewable technology could increase from US$100bn to US$600bn by 2030 and create 8.5 million jobs. Europe is still leading the world in this regard, but encouraging signals from President Obama in the US (and indeed, one of the world’s biggest ever oil spills) mean that the entire Western world is starting to fall in line.
Europe has managed to spearhead the renewable energy revolution through smart, strategic government policy, and by working closely with the private sector to advance incentives and regulations that encourage the necessary behaviour from consumers, households and businesses. The landscape has been slowly transformed with wind turbines on fields dotting the European landscape, and vast solar arrays with tens of thousands of panels that have tracking technology to follow the sun.
Currently, Europe leads the world in the production of wind power, while the US has less than half of Europe’s wind capacity and China almost a third. Solar power has also surged, with photovoltaic capacity in the European Union growing at an annual rate of 70 per cent.
It all adds up to an exciting future for the industry in every single world market and one that we’ll continue to report upon in the coming years.
Power and Energy Solutions is committed to bringing you the latest news, analysis and comment from leading industry figures and internationally-respected associations across Europe, the US and beyond. With our portfolio of titles from across the continents, which embrace both the solar/PV and wind energy arenas, you can be sure of staying one step ahead of the game.
