RESOL has developed an economical solution for using excess current produced by PV systems – the DeltaTherm® PV immersion heater controller. This new controller can be fitted to all stores equipped with an electric immersion heater and is very easy to install, thus saving time and money. The controller reliably detects excess current and calculates the energy available. It then redirects the energy to a variable electric heater of up to 3 kW for heating the store. In this way, the excess power of a PV system can be converted into thermal energy and stored as renewable energy. The Cherbourg plant will have the capability to manufacture the world's longest blade at 88.4 meters.  Creation of a production hub in the European renewable energy industry  LM Wind Power, a leading, global manufacturer of wind turbine blades announced today that it will open a new wind turbine blade factory dedicated to the offshore market in Cherbourg, Normandy, France. The factory will be built on a site developed by Ports Normands Associés (PNA), a port authority that includes the Normandy region and the Manche Department. Ground breaking will begin in March 2017 and production is expected to commence from June 2018. Ultimately, the company expects to employ over 550 people, with as many as 2,000 further indirect jobs resulting in the local area. LM Wind Power has worked together with the Normandy local authorities and in particular the Normandy Region in order for this new factory, ideally located on the port of Cherbourg, to be able to start production swiftly and serve the growing offshore wind market. Lightsource Renewable Energy, Europe’s leading solar energy company, has completed the purchase of a 1.32MWp portfolio of residential solar installations. The portfolio is comprised of 469 installations across the UK from Ecos Solar Nine in a deal valued at £2.3million. As part of the deal, Lightsource will receive the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) payments from the installations and will manage the maintenance of the systems for the length of the FIT term. The latest portfolio, which has an average installation size of 2.8kWp, was introduced to Lightsource by real estate specialists Strutt & Parker. Lightsource is looking to substantially invest into its residential rooftop portfolio over the next five years. The company is currently exploring opportunities to purchase both domestic and commercial systems in 2017. Lightsource has also recently launched a new buyback scheme that allows businesses and homeowners to realise a cash lump sum for their existing rooftop solar installations. With the largest solar O&M fleet in Europe, at just under 2GW, the company has invested heavily in its best-in-class monitoring infrastructure, which allows its in-house team to monitor hundreds of thousands of PV systems. Dounreay Trì Limited welcomed today’s decision of the Highland Council to approve its proposed demonstration floating wind farm off the Northern coast near Thurso.  The Council was formally consulted on the project as part of Marine Scotland’s consideration on the planning application. Marine Scotland will now be able to complete its assessment and make a recommendation on the project to Scottish Ministers. According to the Renewables Obligation Scheme which the wind farm will operate under the Government has to take a decision by 31 March for it to proceed. The twin turbine project will be capable of generating 10MW of electricity, enough to power around 8,000 homes. By opening up the deeper waters off the North and West Coast of Scotland new floating wind farms can make a significant contribution to helping Scotland meet its renewable energy targets. The potential of photovoltaics (PV) has not yet been exhausted. Both industry and research continue to work intensively on increasing the efficiency and reducing the costs of solar cells, the basic component of every PV power plant. Now researchers at Fraunhofer ISE have produced a multicrystalline silicon solar cell with 21.9 percent efficiency, successfully bringing the world record back to Freiburg.   Higher efficiencies and optimized processing steps are decisive for decreasing the cost of solar electricity even further. Both of these are an integral part of the photovoltaic research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. With its newest efficiency value, the Freiburg researchers have once again broken a world record: A multicrystalline silicon solar cell converts 21.9 percent of the incident sunlight into electricity. As in the years from 2004 to 2015, Fraunhofer ISE again holds the world’s record for multicrystalline silicon. The record solar cell consists of n-type high performance multicrystalline silicon, or HP mc-Si. Compared to p-type silicon, this material shows a higher tolerance to impurities, especially iron. The industrial production today uses multicrystalline p-type silicon material with average solar cell efficiencies of about 19 percent.
